What is windows server?

 Microsoft windows server OS (operating system) is a group of enterprise server operating systems that is used for   sharing services with multiple and provide administrative control of applications, services and data storages.

Windows Server History

Microsoft provide the first windows server in April 2003 and the first OS name was windows server 2003. Microsoft’s history of developing operating systems for server computer goes back to Windows NT 3.1 advanced server edition. The first windows server including Active Directory, DNS server, DHCP server and group policy was windows server 2000 server edition.

 Windows Server 2022

 Windows server 2022 is the latest version of Microsoft operating system for windows server. It was released on   August 18th, 2021, three years after windows server 2019.

 Windows server 2022 codebase is like windows 10 and requires x86-64 CPUs.

Different Editions of Windows Server 2022

There are three editions of windows server 2022:

  1. Standard
  2. Data Center
  3. Data Center: Azure Edition

All these editions have option to install the server core and desktop version. With core version you don’t have a desktop for managing and administrating your windows server but in the desktop version you have desktop for remote desktop sessions for non-server services and other components.

Windows Server 2022 Standard

The Standard Edition is the base version of Windows Server 2022. The single license of the standard version can only work with two virtual machines and one Hyper-V host.

The Replica Storage option is available with one partnership and one resource group with a capacity of 2 terabytes. Features such as hot patching, software-defined networking and storage are not available in the standard version

Windows Server 2022 Data center

This version has some features that we don’t have it in standard edition, such as protected VMs. This is a good feature for protecting the firmware and startup files of the VM and enables the BitLocker disk encryption.

We have some features in Data center edition like storage replica and storage spaces direct. Also, you can support Host Guardian Hyper-V in data center edition.

Windows Server 2022 Data Center Azure Edition

This edition is designed for the Microsoft Azure platform. We have specific features that we don’t have in standard and data center edition like the hot patch feature. This feature allows you to install updates on the server without any restarting.

Windows 2022 Azure Edition runs virtual machines on the Azure Stack Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) operating system, known for its security, performance, and new hybrid capabilities.

Windows Server 2022 New Features

In this part I am going to mention the most important and new features about windows server 2022 that is provided by Microsoft.

  • Advanced multi-layer security in Server 2022 security module provides the comprehensive protection that servers need in today’s modern tech world.
  • Server 2022 is built on three key pillars: Advanced protection, simplified security, and preventative defense.
  • TLS 1.3 and HTTPS are enabled by default on Windows Server 2022. Typically, this protects clients’ data connecting to the server and eliminates obsolete cryptographic algorithms. It also enhances security over older versions and aims to encrypt as much of the handshake as possible.
  • DNS Client in Server 2022 now supports DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) which encrypts DNS queries using the HTTPS protocol.
  • New improvements to Windows Admin Center to manage Server 2022 include capabilities to both reports on the current state of the Secured-core features.
  • We have Hot Patching – A new way to install updates on new Windows Server Azure Edition virtual machines (VMs) that doesn’t require a reboot after installation
  • Several platform improvements for Windows Containers, including application compatibility and the Windows Container experience with Kubernetes.
  • Microsoft Edge replaced with Internet Explorer in windows server 2022.
